Yesterday was my birthday and it wasn't a very flash affair. The boys and I went around to Alice's in the afternoon where we ate some cake and a few other treats but the memory that will stay with me is of the beautiful happy birthday song that the 3 boys sang me with big beaming smiles. (Alice sang too but she wasn't nearly as cute)

Daddy cars

After yet another night where we allowed out bed to be invaded by boys who struggle to go back to sleep at night Luke woke up in our bed the other morning. He sang me a variety of songs such as itsi-bitsy spider and the wheels on the bus before leaping up and saying 'Where's Daddy'. Instead of running down the hallway as I expected him to do he ran to the window, put his head under the curtain and said "Daddy car, one, two. Daddy gone." Luke has learnt from Jack and I that unless there are 3 MacLennans cars outside Daddy isn't home

The long awaited Grandparent visit began yesterday. As it was 8pm Jack was well asleep but night-owl Luke was still up and watching out the window as they pulled up. Luke's language has shot ahead in the time since they last saw him and although he had never shown any clear awareness of what 'Granny' & 'Grandpa' meant before when they walked in the door he was there to meet them clammouring 'Gran-Car Gran-Car'

When Jack was the same age he called Grandpa 'Grandma' so at least it's an improvement

Luke is no longer a baby and his new independence is marked with the constant refrain of 'I do it'. Sometimes he needs a little help and it doesn't seem to hurt his pride if I conveniently place a bag where he can stand on it to get height. Luke also stops & goes back to shut the doors we go through although sometimes he does campaign to be carried

Luke's language it gaining in sophistication and he is pretty good at getting him message across. He is frequently to be seen standing at our feet reaching up and saying 'pick it up'. We correct him 'Pick me up' and Luke invariantly responds 'yersh' in that wonderful tone he has that seems to say 'See Mummy - I knew you could do it"

I had to sign an accident report for Luke when I picked him up from daycare the other day.

On arriving at Daycare to pick up the boys the staff were at pains to tell me that Luke had focussed for 45 minutes on a particular puzzle (shape sorter). I was a little dismissive. We have noticed that when he is not demanding to watch TV Luke is able to concentrate well and his concentration has been commented on before by the other daycare but it was when the staff told me that a long concentration span for children his age was 5 - 10 minutes I realised that this is a particular strength of Luke's.

In many ways the passions of an almost two year old seem predictable - wiggles, bob the builder, fireman sam.

These days Luke seems to live for the wiggles and when we went to the library today he firmly clutched his wiggles dvd in one hand and his bear in the other for the duration of our visit. After we got home I put on Jack's DVD (superheros) while Luke came to draw with me for a bit but he seemed to sense that fair's fair and after Jack had watched a few episodes Luke started to repeat the mantra 'wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle'. He submitted to a nappy change once it became clear I was complying & settled into wiggly bliss

Luke has a pretty wide vocab now including the requisite car, truck, bus, a-pear (aeroplane), bob (the builder), wiggle(s). He can string a a couple of words together as in 'that way', 'bear wet' or 'I'm poo'.

The other day we were getting ready to go out and Lukey started gooing shoos shoos. I went to his bedroom to get his shoes, only to run into him on the way back bringing my shoes to me!

A man of few words - but many sounds

While Luke doesn't have manay discernable words yet he seems to be able to express most things with a mixture of vowels. It's amazing what can be communicated by saying a a a a a in different ways. When looking at books with him, however, it's clear that he does have distinct words for lots of things - it's just that they are completely unrecognisable to us! When his fledgling language doesn't work he suppments it by grabbing you by the hair, trousers or hands and dragging you to what he wants.

Although his words aren't that clear his tunes sometimes are. It's not that you consciously recognise his singing - it's just that you find yourself singing 'twinkle twinkle little star' and realise that it's because he's been 'aah-ing it' for the last few minutes.
