I seached freeBMD on 26 Jan 2008 and could find no marriage of an Albert or Alfred JAMES to anyone who could be Kate COUCHMAN. I do not believe that there was such a marriage. Since Kate had her baby Kathleen in the Holborn workhouse, she probably made up the father’s name, Alfred James. When the daughter was five years old, Kate married a widower Rufus Harmer and he gave the little girl his surname. When the daughter Kathleen married in she gave the name of her father as Albert James.

Kate married Rufus William HARMER on 22 Dec 1898 in the parish church of Sheringham in Norfolk. The marriage certificate shows Kate COUCHMAN, 46 year-old widow, resident in Sheringham, daughter of William James COUCHMAN, soldier. Rufus was a 46 year-old widower, a labourer, resident in Sheringham, son of Thomas Harmer, labourer. Witnesses were Charles HARMER and Elizabeth HARMER. Registration district was Erpingham. Elizabeth was probably the sister of Rufus.

Kate Harmer died on 23 Apr 1913 at 56 Hume Street, Warrington, aged 61, of cardiac disease which she’d had for two years. The informant was her widower Rufus William Harmer, a carter for a contractor. His residence was 56 Hume Street, Warrington and he was present at her death. 98
