Benjamin's family were grain merchants. They came from Yorkshire but had been in Lincolnshire for some generations before he was born
Benjamin and Anne and their children family lived in Spilsby and the boys attended the Grammar School.

Anne's father was a farmer in Little Staping, near Spilsby.
In about 1853 Anne took all her surviving children, except Benjamin, to Australia. We do not know why she left her husband and eldest son. Presumably the wife of Joseph and the husband of Anne Maria also emigrated.
