John emigrated to Victoria ca 1851 •3
It is said that Jane GETHAN had emigrated with her sister from Wales when Jane was about 18, to escape a cruel step-mother.
John met her when he saw a drunken sailor accosting her and intervened. After their marriage they went to the diggings at Rhymney near Ararat where they started a store. In 1865 they lived at Sheas Flat.
When John BONNER died his brother took a ship to Australia intending to take Jane and the children back to Wales but the ship sank and he was drowned. •1

Jane's great-grandson, Sid, saw her in Ararat. He remembered her as short and round, with big voluminous skirts and a little bonnet.
