Lesley McNaughton has a business card with the following text - A.R. Ayers & Co, Leather, vellum & parchment manufacturers & importers, Tyer's Gateway, Bermondsey, London, S.E. - and in smaller print - Parchment Works, Hackbridge, Surrey - and at the top - Telephone No. 2985 Hop. Written by hand on the reverse is the address 22 Sackville Street. Sue Rowley has a postcard with this address dated 15 Jul 1904. The postcard was sent by Arthur’s wife, Clara, to her son.

According to his grand-daughter, Kathleen Rowley née Ayers, Arthur's business partner cheated him and Arthur retired to his bedroom, never to come out again.

Arthur was buried in a double grave in Hastings Cemetery. His wife wrote to their son Arthur Edward Woodzell AYERS in Victoria, telling him of the death on 3 Dec 1931 and funeral. She said that she expected to join him in Hastings Cemetery. (did she?)

The34 birth of Clara Elizabeth Anne Woodzell LUSSENDEN at her parents' residence 4 Harrow Road, Paddington, was registered in Kensington, sub-district of Saint Mary Paddington, on 1856 - 3 Sept 1856 by her mother Louisa Lussenden formerly Frewer. The certificate gives Clara’s father as Frank Lussenden, confectioner.

Clara and Arthur both acted in amateur theatre. We have a photo of Granny Ayers dressed as Nell Gywn. Frederick Waller, a leading London actor, invited Clara to be his leading lady but this was not considered proper for a “lady”.

In 1925 Clara lived at 303 Seely Rd, Mitcham Lane, Mitcham, Surrey. Letters to her son dated 10 Dec 1931 and 24 Sep 1939 show that later, including during WWII, she was bed-ridden and lived for some years at "Lenzie", 34 St Peter's Rd, St Leonards on Sea, Sussex, home of her daughter, Elsie, and son-in-law, Alexander McLACHLAN. They all moved to a flat in Hove after "Lenzie" was bombed.

Clara converted to Catholicism.
