Misc. Notes
The parish register for Heanton Punchardon records the baptism on 17 Sep 1820 of John Kingdon INCLEDON, son of John INCLEDON, cobler, and Mary INCLEDON, abode Heanton Punchardon. I believe that this was the baptism of Philip Kingdon Incledon and that a mistake was made in the register, mixing the child’s first name with the father’s name, perhaps because of the very unusual nature of middle names at the time in that parish. This belief is based on the fact that there are no other records of John Kingdon INCLEDON in the marriages, burials, census or trade directories and the Mariner’s record for Philip Kingdon Incledon shows that he was born in 1820 in Barnstaple which is the closest town. The combination of names is very unusual but was also used by John INCLEDON, cordwainer, and Mary KINGDON for their youngest son Joseph Kingdon INCLEDON. Their daughter Elizabeth called her oldest son Phillip Kingdon Incledon COATS after her assumes brother Phillip Kingdon INCLEDON. Further more our Phillip Kingdon INCLEDON, Elizabeth COATS and their sister Mary all all named their eldest sons William Henry Kingdon. 137 141

b: 15 NOV 1789 in Pilton, Barnstaple, Devon Co., England, and Mary KINGDON b: 1796 in High Bray. 140 Since we know Philip Kingdon Incledon was born in 1820 , 190 it seems that this is the same person or a twin.

He married Ellen Hall in Dublin. She was the daughter of John Hall, a merchant of Marlborough Street, North Dublin. Philip was a mariner and he gave his address as Custom House Dock. Both were “of full age”. They were married in the parish church of St Thomas, by licence, according to the rites and ceremonies of the United Church of England and Ireland (ie it was a Protestant. church). Witnesses were Mary Brock and M.A. Reilly. Philip signed the register but Ellen only made her mark. 191

Their first child, William, was born 19 May 1849 (or 1850) and their second child, Mary, was born 16 Mar 1851, both in Dublin.

He was certified as a Master Mariner at Dublin , 28 Jun 1851 . His record from the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen indicates the appointments below (some with repeated voyages) -

The neighbours were also families of mariners so we can assume that the wives could help each other when their husbands were at sea.

On 30 May 1863, when he wrote his will, he lived at 51 Knowsley View Boundary Lane, West Derby Road, Liverpool in the County of Lancaster. He died on 17 Dec 1863 in his home at 37 Crosbie Street, Liverpool. His will was proved by his widow Mary, as his sole executrix, on 26 March 1864. It covered effects valued at less than £100, no leaseholds. 192

Margaret Craig said that he may have had a brother, Charles, and another brother who was a singer and Musician.
