Misc. Notes
He probably emigrated to Australia ca 1849 with his parents when he was about 11 years old. (His death certificate stated that he had been in Victoria 55 years -since about 1855 - but his sister Sophie was born in Victoria in 1849.)
He was possibly in business with his father in Geelong in 1859, and he was married on the goldfields at Daylesford in 1863. James was 25, a carpenter, of Daylesford, when his son was born on 6 Jul 1864
Later James worked as a builder. They lived in Fitzroy, Melbourne, in a two story terrace house opposite the Fitzroy football ground in Brunswick Street.
James set up a joinery business in Lonsdale St., Melbourne, about 50 yards up from Swanson St., with a partner --- McMURTRIE.. The business did all sorts of building, carpentry and joinery. They built shops, show cases for shops, fences etc. James took his wife and sons to South Africa to join his son Ronald about 1895.
James used to attend the Scotts Church in Collins St, Melbourne every Sunday morning. The Minister suggested that he ought to have his son Ronald baptised. James wanted the Minister to come to his home but the Minister said that James had to bring the baby to him. James said he wasn't walking all that way (3 miles each way) carrying the baby and, if the Minister wouldn't come to the house, then it couldn't be that urgent. After that James stopped going to church. Ron and the later children were not baptised.
James died before the marriage of his son Ronald in 1911 so never met Aileen.
